March, 2005, Meeting: DEVCON Update

Ray Wright from InterSystems presented the highlights from this year’s InterSystems Developers Conference (DEVCON) that was held at the Mission Hills Weston in Palm Springs in late February.

Ray described InterSystems efforts to penetrate new markets by adding support for Apple Computers’ OS X, and creating language support for PICK (multi-value), TSQL, and SYBASE stored procedures. Ensemble, InterSystems’ new EAI platform was a major focus for this year’s DEVCON and will likely be a big part of InterSystems’ future.

Ray discussed how customers are using Ensemble, and Caché’s Enterprise Cache Protocol (ECP) to successfully meet customer’s business needs. With ECP, very large production environments supporting tens of thousands of users can be easily configured.

Caché 5.1 was discussed. It’s expected to reach “field test” in April, and may be released for general distribution in the 3rd quarter of 2005. The most notable features of Caché 5.1 are its rich roles based security functions and controls, and the new web based management utilities. There will also be improved support for other development environments including .NET, Pearl, Java, etc.

The Future Caché version, code named “Charles” was discussed briefly Key features will include bit sliced indexing, a UML class modeler, and an improved debugger.

Other business discussed at this months meeting included the upcoming election of board members at the next general meeting. Several of the current board positions are up for re-election, but most are willing to serve for another year. Ben Hurley will be completing his service to the board with the end of this term. He has been a valued member of the team and we are thankful for his efforts.
